How to track traffic from ChatGPT and other AI assistants: 7 options compared (2026)
"How much traffic does ChatGPT send us?" sounds like one question, but it is really three, and each needs different data:
- Visits: people who clicked a link to your site in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Gemini. Visible to any analytics script, as long as it can recognise the source.
- Crawler reads: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others downloading your pages for training or a search index. Invisible to analytics scripts, because these bots don't run JavaScript. Only your server or CDN sees them.
- Answer fetches: ChatGPT-User, Claude-User and Perplexity-User opening a page live because a person asked about it. Also server-side only. This is the closest thing to "my page was used in an answer".
Here is what each option can see. Checked against the vendors' own sites in October 2026; prices are entry-level plans.
| Option | AI visits | Crawler reads | Answer fetches | Revenue from AI | No cookie banner | Starts at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics 4 | With a custom channel group | No | No | With ecommerce setup | No | Free |
| Plausible | Yes | No | No | Business plan | Yes | $9/month |
| Matomo | Yes | Yes (per their site) | Not specified | With ecommerce setup | Optional | €22/month cloud, or free self-hosted |
| DataFast | Yes | Yes (server package) | Yes | Yes | Optional script | $9/month |
| Cloudflare dashboard | No | Yes, if your site runs through Cloudflare | Yes | No | n/a | Included |
| Server logs | Partly (referrer) | Yes | Yes | No | n/a | Free |
| PageLens | Yes | Yes (server snippet) | Yes | Yes, last or first visit | Yes | $5/month |
1. Google Analytics 4
GA4 can show AI visits if you add a custom channel group that matches chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai and similar referrers (step-by-step guide). It filters all bots, so crawler reads and answer fetches never appear. Visitors who decline cookies are only modelled, and only at higher traffic levels. Best for: sites already invested in GA4 that only need the visit count.
2. Plausible
Cookieless and EU-hosted, with a report of which AI tools send you traffic. It doesn't report crawlers or answer fetches. Best for: a simple, privacy-friendly traffic dashboard where AI visits are one source among others.
3. Matomo
Open source, self-hostable, and now with AI traffic reports that cover AI sources, human versus AI behaviour and pages used by AI. Much more than most sites need, which is also its strength. Best for: teams that need on-premise hosting or very detailed reporting.
4. DataFast
Revenue-first analytics with server-side AI crawler tracking (answers, indexing and training, with IP verification) through an npm package or a plain HTTP call. Cookieless tracking is an optional script. Best for: indie founders who want revenue by channel and bot traffic in one dashboard.
5. Cloudflare
If your domain is proxied through Cloudflare, its bot and AI crawler dashboards show which AI crawlers request your site, and let you allow or block them. It doesn't connect those requests to visits or revenue. Best for: a free look at crawler activity and controlling who gets in.
6. Server logs
Free and exact. Search your access log for the AI user agents:
grep -E "GPTBot|OAI-SearchBot|ChatGPT-User|ClaudeBot|Claude-User|PerplexityBot|Perplexity-User" access.log | wc -l
User agents can be faked, so for anything important check the IP against the ranges OpenAI, Perplexity, Google and Microsoft publish. Best for: a one-off check, or teams comfortable with log tooling.
7. PageLens
Disclosure: this is our product. PageLens puts all three on one page: crawler reads, answer fetches, AI visits and the revenue they bring, per page and per assistant, with bots verified against published IP ranges and a list of what to change (pages AI reads but never uses, pages it uses that nobody clicks, pages bots expect that don't exist). Cookieless by default, data in the EU. Best for: sites that want to know whether AI visibility turns into customers, and what to fix.
Which one should you use?
- Just want the number of AI visits: GA4 with a channel group, or Plausible.
- Want to see whether AI reads and uses your pages: you need server-side data: Cloudflare or server logs for free, DataFast or PageLens for a dashboard.
- Want to know if AI brings customers: a tool that ties AI visits to revenue: DataFast, Matomo with ecommerce, or PageLens.
Before any of that, make sure AI bots can reach your site at all. The free AI visibility check tests robots.txt, CDN blocks and pages that are empty without JavaScript in about ten seconds.
